Getting everyone reading, by Mrs Lucas
We believe that teaching children to read is the greatest gift we can give our children.
Learning to read is the beginning but not the end. Our children make rapid progress as early readers and, right from the beginning of this journey, we want them to develop a love of reading.
Having access to stories and storytelling, especially at a time of pandemic, feeds our children’s imagination, their vocabulary and knowledge of the world. The more our children read and have opportunities to talk about what they read, the more words, people and worlds they encounter and understand.
So… we have worked hard to develop our social reading spaces for our children. We started by conducting pupil surveys to find out what the children love about reading, their interests and preferences. The feedback helped us shape our provision. Our library now has a Storyteller’s Chair (with special thanks to Mrs Hinder) and brand new, high-quality texts for the children as well as graphic novels and magazines. Author’s are showcased to encourage children to branch out and try something new and bold. Ramsbury Recommends is a key part of our library which showcases the children’s own favourite books to encourage a buzz about books.
Each class has two Ramsbury Bookworms, selected by their peers, who support us in developing our reading spaces with the children at the centre. They feedback on their class preferences, support their peers with recommendations and help us review books. We are investing heavily in our library spaces and the Ramsbury Bookworms have a pivotal role in this.
We were delighted to welcome award winning children’s author Smriti Halls in a virtual live storytelling session with our youngest children. Our older children recently enjoyed a session with the talented Katherine Rundell.
