World Book Day 2023

At Ramsbury School, we love to snuggle up with a good book. To celebrate World Book Day this year, we came to school wearing our pyjamas, along with our favourite teddy; full of excitement ready for a fun packed day.

To kick start the day, our assembly focused on great news books and fantastic authors. Mrs Creed, English Subject Lead and Class 4 teacher, surprised the children (and the staff!) with a special reading and live performance of ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ by Julia Donaldson.

“Wise old man, won’t you help me, please? My house is a squash and squeeze”. A little old lady (played by Mrs Hinder) grumbles and grouses that her house is too small. When she asks a wise old man (Mrs Pollock) for help, he suggests that she brings her farmyard animals (the hen – Miss Ferguson, the goat – Mr Maull, the pig – Mrs Pilkington and the cow – Head Teacher, Miss Price) into the house. That’s when things get really cramped! When she finally manages to push the farm animals all out again, she’s amazed at how big her house feels, and she comes to realise that it’s precisely the right size for her.

At the end of the assembly, each class was given a present, especially chosen for them by Mrs Creed. They were under strict instructions not to open the package until 2:40pm. At the end of the day, teachers swapped classes to reveal the mystery book and read the new story to the class.

Our favourite ‘Stop, Drop and Read!’ returned for World Book Day. Everyone enjoyed extra time to stop what they were learning, drop what they were doing and read our favourite books when the bell was rung throughout the day. Our Great New Space Library was open throughout the day for children to enjoy and discover new books.

The children also joined an online lesson, live from Batley Library in West Yorkshire exploring genre, characters and storytelling, with amazing authors including Michael Rosen and Katie and Kevin Tsang.

We rounded up World Book Day with an online ‘Snuggle Up Story Time’ in the evening. Children were invited to grab a cosy blanket and join Snuggle Up Story Time over Zoom with Mrs Creed, Mrs Lucas (English Hub Lead) and Mrs Pollock.
